FICA All “accountable institutions”, including attorneys, estate agents, banks, long-term insurers, investment advisers and certain other organisations must comply with certain legal obligations placed on them by the Financial Intelligence Centre Act 38 of 2001 (“FICA”). FICA obliges Leigh Patterson Attorneys, prior to acting for a client, to obtain FICA compliance information from such client in order to establish and verify the identity of both our new and existing clients and to ensure our ability to report “suspicious and unusual transactions”. In circumstances where a client fails, upon request, to supply the necessary information and supporting documentation, we may refuse to complete a particular transaction until such information and documentation is made available to us.
